During the last 40 years, molecular biology has gone through the most unbelievable and dramatic revolution by far much more important than any other scientific discipline.
Biology, and, as a consequence, medicine, have to be written, analyzed and studied again, or, in others words, reconceived by using the new tools, technologies and all the new knowledge brought by molecular and cellular biology as well as by biochemistry, physics, mathematics, etc.

Aims
The teaching of the molecular biology subject in the coming months has to provide to the student the basic knowledge, the tools and the mechanisms of thinking suitable to understand the molecular bases of disease, as well as all the technology necessary to practice medicine with the scientific method.
Competences
At the end of the semester, and having completed all the teaching sessions, students have to be able to:
Understand the bases of molecular biology and the techniques currently used in the diagnostic process.
Design strategies for diagnosing and studying diseases of molecular bases.
Understand the bases of gene transcription and its regulation, which are the essence of fisiology and disease.
To obtain the suggested competences

Tema 16 Casos Clínics
Main classes or Classes magistrals (CM): Theoretical presentation of a particular topic by the teacher (2 hours including a 15 minute break).
Problem Based Learning (PBL) or Aprenentatge Basat en Problemes (ABP): Discussion of a specific problem by the students. The students will draw the methods, results and conclusions. The teacher will guide the whole discussion.
Clinical Cases or Casos Clínics (CC): Exposition of a clinical case known in advance. The students will raise questions and answers to resolve it. It will be prepared in small groups which will expose a power point presentation. The teacher will guide the whole process.
Practical work or Pràctiques (P): Experimental laboratory practical works of molecular biology techniques. Visit to the Vall d’Hebron Research Institute.
Virtual Teaching or Ensenyament virtual (EV): Teaching material available on line, that could be included in the partial and final tests.
50% Partial test (Note: To pass this partial test, students need a score of 65% or more of correct answers. Total= 100 questions).
50% Final test (Practical work, 10 questions in the final test; and Clinical cases, 10 questions in the final test. Total 100 questions).
Note 1: up to a 30% of the questions in the tests do not necessarily would belong to the topics presented in the classes, but have to be in the recommended readings.
Note 2: in order to average all the partial evaluations, the score result of the final test has to be at least 5.
Note 3: both tests will be of multiple choice having 4 possible answer options. Correct answers will count +1 and errors -0.25.
