Pablo Gálvez, a member of the UIC Barcelona Albert J. Jovell Institute for Public Health and Patients, took part as a speaker at the 36th semFYC (Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine) Congress, during the round table entitled Research Panel: Generating evidence aimed at patients’ needs. He was joined on the panel by Katherine Cowan, senior advisor at the James Lind Alliance, an institution founded by the National Institute for Health Research, and Agustín Gómez de la Cámara, lead researcher and head of the CIBERESP research group.11/07/16

Pablo Gálvez, a member of the UIC Barcelona Albert J. Jovell Institute for Public Health and Patients, was a speaker at the 49th SEPAR (Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery) Congress. Gálvez took part in the symposium SEPAR patients: people understand one another through talking... or do they? The session was set up as a forum in which various topics could be discussed that affect the way illness is experienced by patients and their families. Emphasis was put on the importance of taking into account their experience and abilities in respect of understanding oral and written health information.11/07/16

Dr M. Dolores Navarro, Director of the Albert J. Jovell Institute for Public Health and patients at UIC Barcelona and a member of staff at Harvard Medical School has been working in recent months with the Centre for Primary Care at the University of Harvard in order to write up a case study on Primary Care in Catalonia. The system in Catalonia interests them because it has achieved very good healthcare indicators when compared to their own.19/02/16

Pablo Gálvez, member of the UIC Barcelona Albert Jovell Institute of Public Health and Patients took part in the 1st Oncology and Innovation Workshop “Co-creating health: information and emotional support for cancer patients” held in Madrid on 20 January. Galvez spoke about innovation in the information required by patients, providing strategies based on qualitative research on behalf of patients aimed at discovering their needs, health literacy and evaluating educational material to increase its effectiveness.01/02/16

Dr M. Dolors Navarro, head of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and director of the UIC Barcelona Albert J. Jovell Institute for Public Health and Patients contributed to the book España 2015. Situación social published by the Centre for Sociological Research (Spanish acronym CIS) which was launched at the Zurbano Palace in Madrid on 24 November 2016. Dr Navarro’s contribution was a chapter entitled Equilibrio entre salud y sanidad (The balance between health and healthcare). The book makes an exhaustive analysis of the structure and social situation of Spain. The work features contributions from 160 professors and researchers representing different generations and provides an authentic snapshot of the country’s social reality.14/12/15

In Montevideo on Friday, 4 December Dr Arrighi, deputy director of the UIC Barcelona Albert J. Jovell Institute of Public Health and Patients visited the Palliative Medicine service of the Hospital Maciel run by Dr Piriz, Director of this service and of the Uruguay National Palliative Care Plan.13/12/15

At the beginning of December, Dr Miguel Ángel Schiavone, Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Catholic University of Argentina (UCA) and Dr Xavier Corbella, Vice Dean of the UIC Barcelona Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences signed an academic cooperation agreement. The purpose of the agreement is to foster rotation and work placements for final year medical degree students, joint research work into the areas of neuroscience and sleep, the double UCA-UIC degree course on Healthcare Management Services and training in medical education and other postgraduate courses. All of these activities will be carried out under specific work agreements.11/12/15
