Limited Places

This programme is designed for students who have completed their fourth year of a dentistry degree, fifth-year students or students who have recently graduated with little or no experience in clinical practice.

Objectives

  1. Give students the opportunity to carry out basic dental practices at the UIC Dental Clinic.
  2. Acquire the skills required to perform diagnosis and examination of a patient.
  3. Introduce the students to clinical practice in order to perform removable prosthetics.
  4. Facilitate learning through clinical practice to perform restorative treatments such as type I, II, III, IV, V fillings and reconstructions with implants.
  5. Enable students to carry out basic clinical root canal treatments.
  6. Train students in basic surgery, simple tooth and residual root extraction.
  7. Enable students to identify different types of periodontal diseases, their aetiology and clinical characteristics, ensuring the student is able to diagnose periodontal diseases and treat primary and moderate forms.
  8. Give students the chance to carry out clinical practice for basic periodontal treatments.
  9. Enable students to educate and motivate the patient throughout each stage of periodontal treatment and, in particular, during the maintenance stage.

Competences to be acquired by students

  1. Be able to identify the patient’s concerns and expectations, as well as communicating effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing, with patients, family members and other professionals.
  2. Be able to share information with other healthcare professionals and work in a team.
  3. Understand the importance of maintaining and using patient information records for analysis, while keeping data confidential.

  5. Be able to perform a full mouth examination, including any X-ray and complementary examination tests deemed necessary, as well as taking any appropriate clinical references.
  6. Be capable of performing a sound initial diagnosis and planning a reasoned diagnostic strategy; capable of recognising situations requiring urgent dental treatment.
  7. Acquire clinical experience under appropriate supervision.
  8. Perform X-ray tests necessary for dental practice, interpret the images captured and become familiar with other relevant image diagnosis techniques.
  9. Identify the main cause of trouble and the history of the current illness. Perform a general medical history on the patient and create a clinical record truly reflecting the patient record.
  10. Manage, distinguish and choose dental materials and instruments.
  11. Become familiar with dental biomaterials: how to use them, properties, indications, allergies, biocompatibility, toxicity, waste disposal and environmental impact.
  12. Become familiar with and use basic equipment and instruments for dental practice
  13. Take and interpret x-rays and other image-based procedures relevant for dental practice.
  14. Determine and identify the aesthetic requirements of the patient and be able to address their concerns.
  15. Apply local anaesthesia techniques.
  16. Prepare and isolate the operating field
  17. Assess and treat the patient with cavities or any other non-carious dental disease and be able to use all the materials designed to restore the shape, function and aesthetics of the tooth in patients of all ages.
  18. Perform root canal treatments and apply procedures to maintain pulp vitality.
  19. Be able to identify the components of a complete tissue-supported prosthesis.
