The curriculum is organised into six modules, four of which correspond to on-site classes which provide the theoretical and practical framework of the Master’s, and these modules cover three trimesters (from October to June). The fifth and sixth modules involve professional work experience and the final Master’s dissertation, and are undertaken throughout the entire academic year.

Tools for Cultural Management (3 ECTS)

This course offers practical knowledge of the methods and tools necessary for managing cultural activities and institutions, while helping to develop the students’ capacity to apply these resources to solving specific problems through dealing with them appropriately and thereby improving the decision-making process.

Legal Aspects of Museums, Foundations and Cultural Companies (3 ECTS)

Museums and foundations which manage museums have acquired a great social importance based on the varied range of cultural, social and financial activities they offer. At the same time, it is clear that States have great interest in regulating the different cultural manifestations carried out within their territories and there are therefore a number of legal regulations governing this area. As a consequence of these two factors, cultural managers must not only be aware of the importance of the correct management of museums, institutions and cultural companies, but also know about legal aspects with regard to matters related to administration, taxation and copyright; these aspects are covered in this course.

Society and Culture in the 21st century (3 ECTS)

We study topics such as:

  • Identity and culture
  • The impact of globalization on culture
  • Culture and conflict
  • Culture and Development

It also highlights some of the keys to understand what is the culture and its role in today's society. On the other hand, explores the genesis of the concept of cultural manager and proceeded to define its role in the knowledge society.

Cultural Institutions and Policies (3 ECTS)

This subject focuses on identifying the institutional and organisational framework of cultural action. Students will look at how the different public and private agents intervene in the industry and analyse the planning process through which cultural policies are adapted to meet objectives and later become projects, programmes and specific actions.

Funding for Culture  (3 ECTS)

The objective of this course is to provide students with the necessary tools for cultural management, with a specific focus on financial matters. To this effect, students create, execute and reconcile budgets and study the main aspects of outturn accounts, balance sheets and other important areas of finance within companies. Students also learn about the tools and main legislation that a cultural manager needs to be aware of, such as taxation, funding, contracts, etc.

Cultural Marketing (3 ECTS)

In a highly competitive and globalised environment, knowledge of the market, the competition and the client has become essential in guaranteeing the sustainable success of a company. As a result, the field of application for marketing has become more prominent, taking on greater relevance and increasingly affecting all actions carried out by the company. For this reason, people who wish to make a career in cultural management have to be aware of marketing strategies in order to ensure their cultural proposals stand out from the rest.

Cultural Communication and Information (3 ECTS)

The culture and the media have a relationship is not always easy. This course is studied from a theoretical and practical point of contact between the two social realities. The sessions are taught by communicators specializing in cultural issues from both media and cultural institutions. At the same time, and are provided are exercised, through case studies, instruments and communication skills necessary for the successful dissemination of goods and cultural events.

Creation of Cultural Companies (3 ECTS)

This subject enables students to develop the skills and abilities needed by a cultural entrepreneur, applying the knowledge acquired in other areas to the creation of cultural companies. Creating a company requires a rigorous analysis of the environment, identification of the target public, definition of the product that will be offered by the company, adequate internal organisation and the development of strategic communication and marketing plans. It is based on learning how to develop a real business plan, something that is essential for consolidation and positioning within the cultural industry.

Visual Arts Management (3 ECTS) only in Spanish

This subject deals with the specific management of museums, foundations and cultural centres which offer artistic and historical materials. The administration of museums is complex and requires a clear definition of the concept of the museum itself and the function in serves within its immediate environment. The main objectives of this course are to impart knowledge relating to the theoretical bases of museology and museography, and its application based on analysis of museographic projects.

Cultural Heritage Management (3 ECTS) only in Spanish

This course provides the basic conceptual and methodological bases for the planning and management of heritage projects relating to the fields of diffusion, leisure and tourism, areas of high demand in today’s society.

Curatorship and Exhibitions Management (3 ECTS) only in Spanish

This course is intended to provide the necessary tools for organising temporary and permanent exhibitions in museums or cultural centres, while focusing on the design and practical application of policies to diffuse visual arts, whether arising from government administrations or art galleries and other organisations or institutions within the art market.

Publishing Industry Management (3 ECTS)

This course offers a highly practical vision of this important industry. The objective is to provide the necessary tools to ensure the successful publication of books aimed at the mass market, covering all aspects of the project, from the selection of the manuscript and intervention with the authors, to production, marketing, sales, media diffusion and results.

Audiovisual Industry Management (3 ECTS)

The objective of this course is to analyse the nature of audiovisual products with cultural content, company dynamics and the new visual digital culture arising from the evolution of the Internet, mobile phones, virtual reality, etc. This course offers students a conceptual base with regard to the traditional audiovisual industry, while provoking reflection about the current and future evolution of this medium.

Performing Arts Management (3 ECTS)

The objective of this course is to train versatile professionals capable of planning, managing and evaluating public and private policies in the scenic and musical arts industry. The course aims to provide students with specific knowledge of the methodology applied to cultural management of the scenic arts industry and the organisation and programming of musical and theatrical performances and concert series and seasons.

External Work Placements (12 ECTS)

Work experience programme in companies and organisations within different cultural industries.

Final Master’s Degree Project (12 ECTS)

Development of a cultural project based on theoretical sessions and group tutorials.

The Master’s has more than 50 teachers of different nationalities (approximately 50% of them are not Spanish). All of them assumed the task of transmitting to the students a realistic vision on the world of cultural management.

Most of the teachers belong to the public or private cultural management, from specific areas such as cultural heritage and museums, performing arts, music, etc., which means that they are perfectly able to provide students with the tools they need in order to work in a wide range of areas within the world of culture. 

Remedios Agulles
Society and Culture in the 21st century
 

Remei Agulles Simó is an assistant lecturer (PhD) at the Faculty of Humanities (UIC Barcelona) and collaborates on research projects at the Institute of Advanced Family Studies (IESF) at the same university. She holds a degree in Philosophy from the University of Navarra and a PhD from the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya. She has published articles on service companies, family businesses and care within the home environment. She is a member of the research group SARX on Anthropology of Corporeality (GRC) and previously worked as a researcher for the Entrepreneurship Department at the IESE Business School (2006-2013).

Her current fields of interest are care in the home, the human being as an independent being and corporality.

Mónica Amor
Audiovisual Industry Management (English)

Ms Amor is an executive with 15 years experience in the media. She has an MBA from the San Pablo CEU University of Madrid, a Master’s in Audiovisual Production and a degree in Media Business from the Complutense University of Madrid. She is currently the Account and Company Services Manager at TV3, the Catalan TV network. Prior to this she was Account Manager in Activa Multimèdia Digital in charge of various commercial projects. She was the Producer for documentaries and reports on Canal Natura, and was a Production Coordinator for the Walt Disney Company. She undertook her traineeship in News Production in Canal +, TVE and TVG (Galician Television).

Jordi Auladell
Creation of Cultural Companies
 

Holder of a PhD in Pre-History, Ancient History and Archaeology (UB). Holder of a Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Management (EAE-UPC). Cultural heritage manager and university researcher (1990-2001); financial, organisational and quality consultant for SMEs (2001-2005); since 2005, he has worked as a financial manager in the cultural sector for the Government of Catalonia.

Miquel Bastons
Tools for Managing Culture; Funding for Culture

Holder of a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Navarra and a PhD in Business Management from the IESE Business School. Tenured lecturer at UIC Barcelona. Previously dean of the Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences at UIC Barcelona. Author of books and specialised articles about the decision-making process in organisations.

Joaquina Bobes
Cultural Marketing; Cultural Projects
 

Holder of an undergraduate degree in History, specialising in Pre-History and Archaeology, from the University of Oviedo. Holder of a Master’s Degree in Cultural Management from the University of Barcelona. Executive MBA from the EADA Business School. Postgraduate studies in the Department of Archaeology at Newcastle University (United Kingdom) and in the Department of Cultural Management and Policy at City, University of London (United Kingdom). Founding partner of the consultancy firm ARTImetría, a company specialised in strategic planning and cultural marketing. Since 1998, she has been the company’s general manager and senior consultant. Co-author of Manual de tiendas de museos [Museum Shop Manual] (Trea, 2014).

Cristina Calvet
Legal Aspects of Museums, Foundations and Cultural Institutions

Lawyer specialised in intellectual property rights. For the past 12 years, she has worked as a lawyer in the art and culture sector. She has served as consultant for the Professional Association of Agents, Managers and Promoters of Catalonia (ARC) and at the Barcelona Universal Forum of Cultures as the lawyer assigned to the Department of Show Production. For the past five years, she has worked for the Association of Professional Actors and Directors of Catalonia (AADPC), providing legal advice in the field of the performing arts. As a teacher, she has served as member of the Scientific Committee and lecturer in the Master’s Degree in Intellectual and Industrial Property Rights at the Barcelona Bar Association (ICAB).

Ainhoa González Graupera
Visual Arts Management (Spanish)
 

Holder of an undergraduate degree in Art History and a Master’s Degree in Museum Studies and Cultural Heritage Management from the University of Barcelona. She has taken courses as part of a PhD in Art History, Theory and Criticism and earned an Advanced Studies Degree. From 2004 to 2016, she worked at MACBA as an assistant curator. She has also worked for companies specialising in the transport of works of art and exhibition assembly and collaborated with galleries and artists.

Miguel López-Remiro Forcada
Society and Culture in the 21st Century
 

He is a graduate in Economy and he holds a PHD in Philosophy from the University of Navarra. He has an MBA from IESE and he is the first Spanish graduate from the Getty Leadership Institute in the Claremont University, Los Angeles.  Visiting Scholar and lecturer at University of California, San Diego. Collaborator of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. Deputy Director of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and Founding Director of the Museum of Navarra. 

He is the editor, with worldwide rights, of the anthology of texts by Mark Rothko, Yale University Press and Flammarion. Lecturer in the area of Arts at the University of Navarra. Lecturer at ISEM business school where he is a researcher on creativity and Management. In parallel he pursues a career as consultant of independent art, economist of culture, artististic entrepreneur and curator of institutions and collections of high prestige.

Àngel Mestres 
Leadership, Culture and New Technologies 

He is managing director of Trànsit Projectes (www.transit.es) and a consultant for Innovación, Transferencia y Desarrollo (www.e-itd.com). He is also academic coordinator for the master's degree in Cultural Management at the University of Barcelona, and director of cultural and educational projects in Europe and Latin America.

He was formerly the managing director for DISTESA, which forms part of the Anaya Group. He was director of Communication and External Research at the Culture Institute of Barcelona (ICUB/Barcelona City Council) and has taught at universities and academic institutions in Spain, Chile, Uruguay, Cuba, Paraguay, Portugal, Peru, Andorra, Morocco, France, Mexico, Argentina. President of ABACUS Cooperativa.

Valerie Miles
Publishing Industry Management (English) 
Valerie Miles, writer, editor and translator, was born in the United States and currently lives in Barcelona. She co-founded British magazine Granta’s Spanish-language project in 2003 whilst managing the publishing house Emecé, part of Grupo Planeta, in Spain. She also established the New York Review of Books’ (NYRB) contemporary classics series in Spanish during her time as associate director of Alfaguara. She has written pieces for The New Yorker, The New York Times, El País, La Nación, The Paris Review and Granta, among other publications.  She is currently a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts in the United States for her translation of Crematorio by Rafael Chirbes, soon to be published by New Directions, for whom she has also translated works by Enrique Vila-Matas.  Her co-translation and extended edition of Juan Eduardo Cirlot's Diccionario de símbolos (A Dictionary of Symbols) will be published by the New York Review of Books in 2020. Her translation of Esto también pasará (This too shall pass) by Milena Busquets was selected as a finalist for the Impac Prize in 2016, as well as receiving the PEN Translation Prize.  Her most recent publication from Yale University Press is a study of Nobakov by Azar Nafisi, which gave rise to the author’s best-seller, Reading Lolita in Tehran.  Valerie curated the exhibition Bolaño Archive. 1977-2003 at the CCCB in Barcelona, the fruits of extensive research into the writer’s private archives.  She is currently involved in the publication and translation of Borges, Adolfo Bioy Casares' monumental memoirs, for the NYRB. Her first book, A Thousand Forests in One Acorn presents a collection of conversations with some of the twentieth century’s most important writers. It was first published in English and later translated into Spanish under the title Mil bosques en una bellota. She a member of Malba Writers Residence’s honorary committee in Buenos Aires, alongside John M. Coetzee, Soledad Costantini, Christian Lund and Jorge Monteleone, and she was named one of the “most influential professionals in publishing” by the El Libro Foundation in Argentina.
Jordi Padró

Holder of an undergraduate degree in Geography and History from the University of Barcelona. Consultant in the fields of heritage, museology and cultural tourism. Founder and director of Stoa, a consultancy firm specialising in heritage, museology and cultural tourism. Lecturer in a number of courses, university postgraduate degrees and seminars on cultural and tourism management and local development. Institutional advisor on cultural and tourism policies, museum programming and production, territorial projects aimed at promoting and educating about cultural and natural resources.

Christoph Pasour (Germany)
Audiovisual Industry Management (English). Cultural Projects
 

Mr Pasour is a TV Producer. He holds a degree in Art History and Media Studies from the Freie Universität Berlin (Germany) and also Edinburgh University (UK). He has authored articles for newspapers and magazines on media art and cinematography. He was the project manager and curator at the Museum for Cinematography in Potsdam, Germany; commissioning Editor in the film department of the 3sat cultural television channel (Germany/Austria/Switzerland). He has also been involved in script development (fiction/non-fiction) for production companies in Berlin and Hamburg. He has been a producer/author on documentaries since 2005 for production companies in Berlin, Hamburg and Barcelona for broadcasters such as ARTE, 3sat, ARD, ZDF, RAI, YLE, TV3.

Antònia Maria Perelló
Management and Curation of Artistic and Cultural Heritage Exhibitions (Spanish)
 

She has a PhD in History of Art from the University of Barcelona and currently works as a conservator and collections manager at the MACBA.

She used to be an exhibitions conservator for Barcelona City Council and taught on the master's degree in Cultural Heritage Management and Museology at the University of Barcelona.  From 2007 to 2017, she lectured on Visual Arts Management as part of the master's degree in Arts and Cultural Management at UIC Barcelona, where she is currently responsible for the subject “Curation Management and Exhibitions”. She has given classes and talks at a range of universities in Spain and abroad, taken part in round table discussions and formed part of artistic juries and academic tribunals.

She has curated exhibitions at the MACBA and has held her own touring exhibitions.  Her exhibition Doneu-vos la mà i pugeu a l’infern (Shake hands and climb into hell), and the accompanying book, won her the ACCA Research Prize in 2017.

She has written books and research articles and regularly contributes to specialised committees on markets and heritage at public Catalan institutions. 

Tere Pérez
Cultural Communication and Information

Holder of an undergraduate degree in Medicine and Surgery from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Specialisation in Psychiatry from the University of Barcelona. Specialisation in Psychiatry from the Central University of Barcelona and a certified Expert in Ceremony and Protocol from the Spanish Higher Council for Public Relations. She served as head of the Department of Public Relations and Press for the Grec Festival (1984-1985) and Mercat de les Flors (1986) in Barcelona, the Barcelona Institute for the Humanities (1987-1988) and Grup Balañá (2000-2007). She was in charge of Public Relations and Protocol for the 1992 Olympic Games (Organising Committee of the Barcelona Olympic Games) and the Cultural Olympics from 1988 to 1992, and ran the Teatre Lliure Foundation from 1993 to 1998. Since 1993, she has worked in the area of Public Relations and Protocol at the CCCB (Barcelona Contemporary Culture Centre).

Wendy Ramírez Simon (United States)
Society and Culture in the 21st century
 

Dr Wendy R Simon (Barcelona, 1980) holds a degree in Political and Administrative Sciences from Pompeu Fabra University, and a PhD in Contemporary Philosophy and Classical Studies from the University of Barcelona. She is an associate professor at the Abat Oliba CEU University and the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya. She is also the managing editor of the Journal of Catalan Intellectual History from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and member of the writing council for the Anuari de la Societat Catalana de Filosofía. She is a member of the research group EIDOS - Hermenèutica, Platonisme i Modernitat at the University of Barcelona, and her lines of research include the foundations of American political theory, the political philosophy of modernity and the crisis of contemporary democracies.

María Ribas
Cultural Communication and Information; Cultural Projects

Independent cultural consultant. Holder of a master’s degree in Journalism from El País-Autonomous University of Madrid. Holder of an undergraduate degree in Political Science and Sociology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Holder of an undergraduate degree in Media Studies from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She has worked for the Spanish newspapers El País, La Vanguardia and El Periódico de Catalunya. She was head of Cultural Press for the “la Caixa” Foundation (2001-2008). Head of Press and Public Relations at MACBA (Contemporary Art Museum of Barcelona; 2008-2012). In February 2013, she became a founding member of the digital newspaper catalunyaplural.cat, associated with eldiario.es.

Conxa Rodà de Llanza

Philology. Over the past 20 years she has worked in media, publishing and web architecture. She was the media director at the Culture Institute of Barcelona. She was head of projects at the Picasso Museum between 2006 and 2011 and later director of strategy, innovation and digital transformation at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona from 2012 to 2019. She teaches on the Museum Management programme at the PyPA Foundation in Buenos Aires, Argentina (2013-2016).  She set up and co-directed the postgraduate course in Museum Management at the Pomeu Fabra University (2012-2015) and currently do-directs the Course on specialization in digital strategy in cultural organisations, which is run by the UOC (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (2016-2020). She is a member of the Harvard Business Review Advisory Council and the jury for the Best of the Web award from the conference Museums and the Web (2009-2020).

David Roselló

Teacher in courses throughout Spain, Latin American, Europe and Africa. Consultant on numerous studies and strategic plans for culture and cultural projects. Author of the book Diseño y evaluación de proyectos culturales [Designing and Assessing Cultural Projects].

José María Sanchis 
Performing Arts Management (English)

Jose Maria Sanchis Perales was born in Valencia. He holds a degree in Law from the University of Barcelona, is specialised in international relations and spent three years preparing for the annual national examinations at the Diplomatic Corps.  He has been working in the cultural sector since 1998, first at the CCCB in Barcelona and from 1999 at L’Auditori in Barcelona in the technical department. From 2003, he was head of production for Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and worked on productions for Sonar Festival, Primavera Sound and Peralada Festival, among others. He lectures on the master’s degree in Management and Musical Production at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, as well as teaching Performing Arts Management at UIC Barcelona. He also regularly collaborates with different educational institutions such as the IESE Business School, Blanquerna, Pompeu Fabra University, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the University of Deusto.

Isabel Villanueva
Leadership, Culture and New Technologies

Isabel Villanueva holds a degree in Audiovisual Communication and Advertising and Public Relations from the University of Navarra. She also has a Higher Degree in Music, with a specialisation in Voice, from the Liceu Higher Conservatory of Music in Barcelona. She recently finished her PhD thesis on “Ópera, Cine y Medios tecnológicos” [Opera, Film and Technological Media]. She is currently vice-dean of the Faculty of Communication Sciences at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona). Her teaching areas are related to Sound, Music and Film and Media and Film Production. As a professional, she has worked as a producer, scriptwriter and music supervisor for various television channels such as Telecinco and Antena3.

Pepe Zapata
Performing Arts Management (English)
 

Pepe Zapata is director of communication, marketing and public affairs for Focus Group. He has worked since 2017 as a partner and consultant at Teknecultura. He previously served as director of Marketing and Communication at Mercat de les Flors. Coordinator of the Alícia Foundation, Food and Science, and cultural manager at the Pompeu Fabra University. Since 2003, he has taught in the Master’s Degree in Business Administration and Management (MBA) at the Pompeu Fabra University - IDEC, and, since 2004, is a guest speaker in master’s and postgraduate programmes in cultural management and at congresses.

Krzysztof Zanussi (Poland)
Audiovisual Industry Management (English)
 

Mr Zanussi is a film, theatre and opera producer and director. He occupied the post of vice-president of the Association of Polish Film-makers between 1974 and 1981. He has directed the TOR Film Studio of Warsaw since 1979. In recent years, apart from his dedication to cinema he has also been a lecturer at the University of Silesia (Katowice, Poland) since 1992, and a columnist for the Polish weekly magazine “Polityka”, as well as a member of the Pontifical Council for Culture in the Vatican.

Degree in the History of Art specialising in Plastic Arts from the Central University of Venezuela (2006). Her thesis investigated the transformation of communication between the spectator and the work of art through digital interactivity and part of this research was published in the book “Estéticas del Media Art” (Aesthetics of Art Media) published by the EUMEDNET group of the University of Malaga. Master’s Degree in Cultural Management from the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (2014). She was a research assistant in the Communications Research Institute of the Central University of Venezuela (ININCO-UCV). She has worked as a cataloguing and archiving assistant at the Deposit Guarantee Fund and Bank Protection of Venezuela and has also been a manager and cultural communicator at SWAB Barcelona, the International Trade Fair for Contemporary Art.
