Module I. Lacrimal system: 15 ECTS

  1. Development, anatomy and physiology of the tear production and drainage systems

  2. Techniques for tear duct diagnosis and assessment

  3. Surgical techniques for treating tear ducts: punctoplasty, external dacryocystorhinostomy, endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy, transcanalicular dacryocystorhinostomy, canaliculodacryocystorhinostomy, surgical treatment of congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

  4. Functional epiphora: treatment assessment and management

Modulel II. Clinical management: 0.5 ECTS

  1. Concept of clinical efficiency

  2. Quality management

  3. Functioning of a clinical unit in a hospital department

  4. Chronic patients and their illness

Module III. Ophtalmological research: 1.5 ECTS

On-site lectures:

  1. Literature search: databases
  2. Critical reading and review of scientific publication methodology
  3. Evidence-based medicine
  4. Clinical research
  5. Practical work: case resolution

Guided work:

  1. Resolution of clinical problems
  2. Drafting of action protocols
Module IV. Eyelid malposition: 10 ECTS
  1. Ectropion: clinical assessment and patient management. Reconstructive surgery, technique depending on the type of ectropion: congenital, involutional, paralytic, cicatricial or mechanical
  2. Entropion: clinical assessment and patient management. Reconstructive surgery, technique depending on the type of entropion: congenital, acute spastic, involutional or cicatricial
  3. Symblepharon: handling of different grafting techniques and postoperative care
  4. Trichiasis and distichiasis: electrocoagulation, plasties, lamellar dissections with cryotherapy
  5. Ptosis: assessment, exploration, classification and surgical treatment. Correction via anterior levator advancement, Mullerectomy, frontalis sling suspension. Diagnosis and management of congenital ptosis
  6. Eyelid retraction: differential diagnosis, comprehensive treatment in the context of Graves' disease, surgical techniques depending on severity
  7. Involutional periorbital changes: patient management. Treatment with fillers and Botox.
  8. Blepharoplasty: medical indications, surgical technique and postoperative care
  9. Facial aesthetic surgery: overall assessment of patient, comprehensive treatment in Ophthalmology, handling of different surgical techniques
  10. Facial paralysis: diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment, overall assessment of patient
Module V. Orbital pathology: 10 ECTS
  1. Differential diagnosis of orbital diseases
  2. Handling of complementary explorations in orbital pathology: CT scan and NMR
  3. Anophthalmic socket surgery: evisceration, enucleation and post-enucleation socket syndrome management
  4. Ocular prosthesis: care and management
  5. Surgical techniques and approaches for treating orbital tumours
  6. Orbital decompression techniques in Graves' disease
  7. Orbital fracture management: diagnosis, medical treatment, surgical indications and techniques for reconstructing the orbital walls. Post-traumatic operation management.
Module VI. Clinical research project: 13 ECTS
  1. Seminars on research methodology:
    a) Scientific method
    b) Literature search
    c) Evidence-based medicine
  2. Designing a study that provides a scientific answer to a clinical question
  3. Oral presentation of the project
  4. Presentation of the results (partial or final) at at least one scientific congress
  5. Publication of the final results
Module VII. Eyelid reconstruction: 10 ECTS
  1. Differential diagnosis of eyelid tumours
  2. Surgical reconstruction of upper eyelid defects
  3. Surgical reconstruction of lower eyelid defects
  4. Reconstruction of canthal defects
  5. Grafts and flaps in periocular surgery

The students will be evaluated on an ongoing basis and with a theoretical-practical exam. Attendance and research work are obligatory.

At the end of each cross-disciplinary module, the students will be asked to complete an exercise in which they will be required to solve a problem. They will be given set guidelines and a deadline.

The students will be required to do an on-site evaluation at the end of each module, in which they will be presented with a series of clinical scenarios that require a response. 

Research project assessment: criteria include the quality of the study, project development, its potential impact and how it is presented before the project assessment committee.

Attendance will be kept, and students must attend at least 80% of all classes.
