  • Academic Requirements

Through online pre-enrolment, candidates state their interest in completing doctoral studies at the UIC. It serves as the access path to start the corresponding procedures for submitting their application to the Doctoral Academic Committee responsible for deciding on admission applications.

  1. The candidate must complete the online registration to the Doctorate Program from the WEB link.
  2. Once the online application has been completed, you will receive an email with the information corresponding to the documentation you must provide and the application form for admission to the Academic Committee of the Doctorate Program through which you must submit the following documentation:
    • Photocopy of your DNI/NIF/NIE/passport.
    • Up-to-date CV with your photograph.
    • Cover letter stating at least:
      • a) Why you want to study the doctorate
      • b) Why you want to study at the UIC;
      • c) In which line of research or area of knowledge of the programme you want to do your thesis.
      • d) Why you want to do your thesis in the line of research/area of knowledge mentioned above or, if you haven't decided, why you want to do this programme.
    • Photocopy of the documents demonstrating you meet the academic requirements for the doctorate
      • a) Entrance qualification if from a Spanish university.
      • b) Entrance qualification if from a foreign university in the EHEA (EEES in Spanish).
      • c) Entrance qualification if from a foreign university outside the EHEA.
    • If you know what you want to research, provide a description of your research proposal specifying at least the title, description, objectives and methodology.
    • If you want to propose a thesis supervisor, attach a Letter of Support from the lecturer/researcher in question in which they state their willingness to supervise your research
    • If your proposed supervisor is not a UIC lecturer, attach their CV, which must include the number of doctoral theses they have supervised and the number of six-yearly increments they have accrued.
  3. On receiving your application, the secretary of the Doctorate School checks that you meet the academic requirements for the doctorate programme and have correctly filled in the form and attached all the required documentation. The secretary compiles all this information into an application file.
  4. Your application file is sent to the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme.
  5. The Academic Committee of the Doctoral Programme assesses how many applications have been received in relation to the number of new-entry places in the programme. It decides on whether to admit candidates based on their CV, academic record and whether the proposed thesis project fits under one of the programme's lines of research.
  6. The Doctorate School informs you on whether you have been admitted into the programme and what you need to do to enrol if you have been..

A) Entrance qualification if from a Spanish university

Provide documentation demonstrating that:

  1. You have obtained an official undergraduate degree. For foreign degrees, you must provide an equivalent undergraduate degree qualification granted by an accredited higher education institution.
  2. You have or are in a position to obtain a master's degree. For foreign degrees, you must demonstrate having an equivalent master's degree qualification granted by an accredited higher education institution.
  3. You are eligible to study the doctorate, without having done a master's degree, if you have:
    • A Diploma of Advanced Studies in accordance with Royal Decree 778/1998 of 30 April.
    • A Research Proficiency certificate in accordance with Royal Decree 185/1985.
    • An undergraduate degree of 300 ECTS credits.
    • A university degree corresponding to level 3 of the Spanish Qualifications Framework for Higher Education in accordance with Royal Decree 967/2014.
    • A Spanish doctorate degree obtained under previous university regulations.

B) Entrance qualification if from a foreign university in the EHEA

Provide documentation demonstrating that:

  1. You have a degree that makes you eligible for studying the doctorate (a master's-level degree). Personal academic transcript or European Diploma Supplement for the degree that makes you eligible for the doctorate (a master's-level degree) specifying the subjects studied and your marks for them, hours/credits for each subject, and your average mark for the subjects you passed.
  2. You obtained an undergraduate degree or equivalent. Personal academic transcript or European Diploma Supplement for the degree or equivalent specifying the subjects studied and your marks for them, hours/credits for each subject, and your average mark for the subjects you passed. If in a language other than Spanish, Catalan, English or French, you must provide a sworn original translation into Spanish or Catalan of your degree and academic record.

C) Entrance qualification if from a foreign university outside of the EHEA

Provide documentation demonstrating that:

You have a degree obtained in a foreign education system, without requiring official recognition, subject to the university verifying that the degree is of an equivalent level of education to a Spanish master's degree and makes the holder eligible for doctorate studies in the issuing country. Entrance on this basis under no circumstances means official recognition of your degree or recognition for any purpose other than entry into the doctorate programme.

You must provide the following documentation:

  • Original legalised photocopy of your academic record with the marks for your university studies.
  • Certificate issued by the issuing university specifying that the degree makes the holder eligible for doctorate studies in the country it was issued.

If in a language other than Spanish, Catalan, English or French, you must provide a sworn original translation into Spanish or Catalan of your degree and academic record.

In this case, you must pay the fees for the equivalence study done to check that you meet the academic requirements for doing the doctorate.
