Master's Degree in Craneomandibular Dysfunction and Orofacial Pain
The study plan for the Master's Degree in Craniomandibular Dysfunction and Orofacial Pain covers one full academic year and requires completion of 60 ECTS. The course is designed to offer students all the necessary skills to be considered a specialist in CMD and OP.
Module I:
Craniomandibular Dysfunction and Orofacial Pain
This module includes all the subjects related to scientific literature (both historical and current) in the fields of CMD and OP.
Students will review well-established concepts in the fields of CMD, OP, occlusion and physiotherapy. This module also includes basic scientific methodology, biostatistics, bibliographic research and science communication. There will also be masterclasses, literature reviews for multiple subjects in the field of CMD, OP, occlusion and physiotherapy (craniomandibular anatomy, the neurophysiology of pain, differential diagnosis, dental image analysis).
There will be continuous evaluation and a final assessment for each of the topics analysed.
Craniomandibular Dysfunction and Orofacial Pain in clinical practice
It brings together all subjects related to clinical practice in the field of CMD and OP. The UDC and LAB training activities will take place in the University Dental Clinic facilities. This module also includes a number of clinical sessions in the fields of Prosthesis, Pathology, Dental Therapeutics, Periodontics, Orthodontics, Oral Medicine and Surgery. These multidisciplinary sessions help students to prevent and resolve the pathologies their patients are suffering from. In addition, students will help professors during the practical sessions for the masticatory apparatus module in the undergraduate degree in dentistry.
Sleep disorders and oral health
This subject brings together all the topics related to scientific literature and clinical practice in the field of sleep disorders and oral health. It is taught in conjunction with head and neck physiotherapy sessions.
Laboratory techniques for Craniomandibular Dysfunction
This subject includes the laboratory practical sessions necessary to allow students to carry out direct and indirect dental operatory techniques. It also covers the skills involved in oral orthosis (night guards using conventional techniques and new technologies such as digital scanning and 3D printing) that are required to offer the treatments provided in dental clinics. These laboratory practices include both theory sessions and practical training. The UDC and LAB training activities will take place in the University Dental Clinic facilities.
Module II:
Multidisciplinary research skills
This module includes all the multidisciplinary subjects involved in research. The subjects are taught as masterclasses, with the exception of the Final Master’s Project and protocol, which is carried out throughout the Master’s through tutorials.
— Biostatistics
— Research ethics and methodology
— Bibliographic research
— Science communication
Final Master’s Project and Protocol
The Final Master’s Project consists of two parts, a clinical/research protocol, and a literature review. One of these projects must be presented at the Annual Conference of the Spanish Society of Craniomandibular Dysfunction and Orofacial Pain as a prerequisite for obtaining the final qualification. In addition, students will be expected to defend the practical side of the course by presenting 5 clinical cases to an external examining board.
