Theoretical Content
Clinical Periodontics
- Epidemiology, Diagnosis and Classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases.
- Etiopathogenesis, immunology, risk and associated factors, relationship with other systemic and genetic diseases.
- Prognosis and treatment plan.
- Microbiology.
- Hygiene phase therapy and non-surgical procedures.
- Antiseptic and antibiotic agents.
- Surgical periodontics:
- Crown lengthening and gingivectomy
- Resective surgery
- Regenerative surgery
- Mucogingival surgery
- Interrelationships between dental specialities:
- Relationship between periodontics and prosthetics.
- Relationship between periodontics and endodontics.
- Relationship between periodontics and orthodontics.
- Maintenance therapy for teeth and implants.
Clinical Seminars
Completing the initial periodontal visit, intraoral photography and x-rays, how to present a clinical case, new classifications for periodontal diseases, periodontal prognosis, hygiene phase therapy, periodontal re-evaluation, treatment and monitoring of patients with systemic diseases, microbiological diagnostic methods, halitosis, dental sensitivity, oral medicine (white lesions, red lesions, vesiculobullous lesions, taking biopsies), resective surgery, tissue regeneration surgery, guided bone regeneration surgery, mucogingival surgery, literature review seminars (reviewing the most significant historical and current papers in the field of periodontics) and clinical case presentation seminars.
Students will have monthly access to online sessions on topics of interest.
Practical Programme
Clinical practicals involving patients at the university clinic:
Treating patients with moderate and advanced periodontitis. Carrying out the hygiene phase, surgery and interdisciplinary treatment with other departments. Surgical treatment includes resective, regenerative and mucogingival surgery on teeth and implants.
Preclinical practice: Workshops and Seminars
(The following seminars will be distributed sequentially as the course progresses).
Scaling and root planing workshop
- Pre-clinical practice on scaling and root planing. Understanding, indications for use and handling different types of curettes and how to sharpen them.
Surgical workshops
- Incision and suture practice.
- Pre-clinical practice on resective surgery.
- Pre-clinical practice on crown lengthening.
- Pre-clinical practice on regenerative surgery.
- Pre-clinical practice on mucogingival surgery.
- Pre-clinical practice on surgery in cases of peri-implantitis.
Courses and conferences
Students must present a paper and/or poster at the SEPA annual conference.
Opportunity to assist students from the Master’s Degree in Periodontics with their surgeries and implants.
Methodology and evaluation
Students will be assessed on a continuous basis for both practical and theory sections, and for science communication.
In order to be awarded the final qualification, students must pass the theory exams for clinical periodontics, must have completed at least 5 clinical cases from start to finish, and must have performed at least 10 periodontal surgical interventions. At the end of the programme students must present and defend a complete final clinical case.
