Materials
Required instruments and materials
General information
The Clinical Residency is a course that involves a significant amount of time in the clinic. You must have the material detailed below to ensure you can complete the course correctly.
At the beginning of the course we will organise visits from major brands, who usually offer special discounts for students.
Students will work in pairs, which means some of the material can be shared (e.g. cameras). This is one option, although we recommend that each student has their own personal equipment.
General material for daily use
- - Windows or Apple laptop
- - Keynote or PowerPoint presentation programs
- - Memory stick (USB pen drive) with at least 32 GB
Clinical material
The University Dental Clinic (UCD) will provide students with a uniform. The UCD will provide all the disposable materials required for patient care (alginate, silicone, sutures, gauze, etc.) and the equipment for implants from a range of different brands.
Materials to be purchased by the student:
- Specific clinic footwear
- Intraoral mirrors and retractors: Intraoral mirrors (occlusal and lateral) and separators
- Reflex camera: Example of a Nikon reflex camera D3500 + Macro lens 105mm + Sigma ring flash or Canon E50 reflex camera + Lens Canon macro lens 100mm + Canon ring flash
- Semi adjustable articulator We recommend the Artex semi adjustable articulator
Rotary instruments:
- Turbine and Midwest (M4) adapter
- Contra-angle
- Handpiece
- Micromotor
Laboratory instruments:
- Wax spatula
- Lecron carver
- Electronic spatula for wax modelling optional
Intraoral radiography date:
- The Planmeca digital development system is installed in the CUO. They should acquire and use the reusable plates of the same brand (Size 2)
Surgical instrument box
Students must have a surgical instrument box, suitable for autoclave sterilisation, in which to keep their instruments. The surgical instruments should be as specified on the list, but they can come from different manufacturers or be better quality. As mentioned above, we will receive visits from different companies at the beginning of the course, and they will present their equipment and special offers to buy them. Students are free to choose the equipment they want.
The recommended (mandatory) minimum instrumentation for implant placement is as follows:
- Sterilisable surgical instrument box. The box should be big enough to hold all the required surgical instruments
- Mouth mirror
- Periodontal probe (UNC-15)
- Minnesota retractor
- Round scalpel handle (NOT flat)
- Prichard periosteal
- Freer periosteal elevator
- Adson forceps without teeth
- Adson forceps with teeth
- Iris scissors (straight)
- Lucas surgical curettes #85 (1), #86 (1), #87 (1)
- Molt surgical curette
- Straight (1) and curved (1) Mosquito forceps
- Crile-wood needle holder
- LaGrange scissors
- Field forceps (4)
Highly recommended additional materials:
- Farabeuf retractors
- Low quality needle holder
- Needle clamp
- Langenbeck retractor
- Tray
- Mouth props in S, M, L
Students must have this equipment for the start of the course, the surgical instrument box will be required from 1st. November onwards.
To access the CUO, the student must bring:
— Personal protection face screen
— Full protection glasses, except in the case of wearing corrective glasses or magnifying glasses. In this case the full protection glasses are not necessary. All other material of special protection will be provided by the clinic.
