Intensive course “Construction in Wood”
The purpose of the course Wood Construction, offered by the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, is to give students the opportunity to discover the huge environmental value that this raw material can bring to construction. Given its conditions, using wood significantly reduces the amount of CO2 released during the construction and building processes. It is a material that, due to its characteristics, is easy to reuse and notably improves thermal and acoustic insulation when applied at a structural level.
The aim of the course on Wood Construction is to explore the ecological, technical and architectural properties of this material, providing students a comprehensive look at the timber supply chain. Through the programme the students will view the entire process, from the initial analysis of the trees’ properties in the forest to the final construction process. At the end of the course, the participants will be required to submit their own proposals for an experimental wood building.
Objectives
To provide students knowledge on the various possibilities of wood construction. To outline the key principles of wood’s properties and provide knowledge of the different materials and manufacturing systems involved in building a wood structure.
To gain practical knowledge of the construction systems by looking at real cases. To provide the students an introduction to prefabricated solutions and wood’s insulation properties, which make the system environmentally friendly and ideal for industrialised construction.
Prospective students
- UIC Barcelona School of Architecture students in years three through five.
- Architecture students from other universities.
- School alumni and architects.
