Line of research applied economics
Responsible
The focus of the lines of research in the doctorate programme lies in an experienced mix of theoretical foundation and guidance in dealing with relevant problems. Writing up the doctoral thesis is especially important, as it is compulsory to defend it during the first year before a specific committee made up of two professors from outside the UIC, and one from the UIC. While drafting their thesis, students will consolidate the skills needed for research that meets UIC standards.
- Education Economics
- Health Economics
- Labour Economics
- Sports Economics
- Industrial Organisation
A great deal of the research carried out in these areas has been undertaken using econometric techniques. In order to do so the supervisors of this research group invited a recognised specialist in order to achieve significant scientific production.
At first glance it may seem like too many fields are being covered here, at least when you look at the number of researchers. However, despite this, it is important to point out that these are areas that are all closely related. The topics studied also tend to bring all the various disciplines together — which becomes clear when observing the titles of the work the group has published. This work includes articles on the relationship between health and educational levels, between the family’s job situation and educational performance, and between the labour market and the professional sports industry, etc.
Some of the topics the group has studied to date and which have subsequently led to publication in indexed journals are described here, although not exhaustively. Other topics were able to be tackled immediately, due to the experience of the researchers, who were able to guarantee a suitable degree of scientific rigour.
On the one hand, these included the following issues: academic performance and the return made on the cost of education, on research and development costs, and labour productivity. Also competences acquired in the educational process that have a decisive impact on individual academic performance and then have an impact on school drop-out and the significance of the family structure in relation to that in their turn.
Issues related to health economics have also been tackled, with particular emphasis on the following aspects: obesity, the relationship between the educational levels of parents and their children's health, and the use of healthcare resources. Additionally, one of the researchers has made a significant contribution to the literature on "peer effects".
On the other hand, in the field of labour economics, the following issues have been addressed: persistent unemployment, temporary work, the job market for professional sportspeople, etc. The latter area of interest constitutes one of the links to sports economics. Within this context anything related to media value and the assessment of intangible talent in professional sport will be examined, as well as more general subjects from the fields of microeconomics and industrial organisation (the structure of competition, free entry, etc.).
Line of research business economics
Responsable
The area of business economics focuses on the study of companies as complex organisations. In order to do this, companies are analysed from multiple perspectives, including based on the fundamental disciplines which help to understand how they are created, how they operate and how they interact with the environment.
This research will be carried out based on the use of qualitative and quantitative methods taken from social sciences, engineering management, and statistics.
The main lines of research that are worked on are as follows:
- Organisational structures and their behaviour.
- Entreneurship and innovation.
- Operations management and quality.
- Internationalisation.
- Knowledge management and the company mission.
Line of research law and society
Responsible
This line aims to analyze the relationship between Law and society, from its dual public and private dimensions.
The Law is an integral part of the social organization, protecting its members through the State, the institutions that compose it and the legal system itself. At the same time, it is essential that the person be the center of the action of law in society.
From this perspective, the Law must guarantee the public and private legal protection of the person, for the attainment of their integral well-being, within the framework of fundamental rights and of the legal system as a whole. From the practical point of view, it is also intended to study, using a multidisciplinary approach, the functioning of the justice system and the agents involved in it, with special emphasis on the means of proof and auxiliary sciences in relation to the justice system.

Line of research the basis of international law: new european and mediterranean actors in international society in the 21st century
Responsible
The team consists of lawyers who specialise in the field of international law, both private and public, and political experts. They all share the following objectives:
- To analyse the current situation of the state as a ‘par excellence’ subject in international law, in both Europe and the Mediterranean.
- To examine the international subjectivity of international organisations and state associations, in both Europe and the Mediterranean.
- To study the subjectivity of the individual and their participation in both Europe and the Mediterranean.
- To examine the new actors who have entered both Europe and the Mediterranean.
The methodology that will be used will be highly legal, and therefore will involve an in-depth examination of the basis of international law. Other elements of private international law will also be incorporated into this examination. Therefore, it will become necessary to incorporate elements of private international law, in connection with the field of the individual.
In relation to the doctoral subject area, it will also become necessary to incorporate elements of political science into our methodology, especially when dealing with the subject of new international actors, such as for example civil society.
In relation to the expected results, apart from the teaching work that a doctorate usually involves, a research team will be set up which will undertake the same line of research proposed in this report. This team will also include the same members. The aim is that the group members will publish articles in indexed journals, as well as organise a conference on international subjectivity (within a two year time frame). Each of the members of the group will have their own individual line of research, which will also lead to the publication of results.
Research line: Public law, administrative and regulatory law.
Responsible
Dra. Montserrat Nebrera González
In the medium term the aim is to look more in-depth into the analysis of regulatory law in Spain, with a special focus on the main regulated sectors: telecommunications, the electricity market, energy and the financial markets. Therefore the objective is to study the legal systems in those sectors in detail, helping to profile their shared elements and unravel the main dilemmas derived from the way they function in the communitarian and international environment. Within this field, we will focus our research on the legal framework of sanctions and, in particular, the extreme legal interest in the actions of the regulating body or the state supervisor.
Objectives
The following will be the main subjects of study:
- The common principles of regulated activity.
- The legal framework of sanctions in regulated sectors.
- The dynamic and function of the regulator.
- The interpersonal relationship between the operator and the supervisor. Regime conflict.
In the general field of Public Law, the aim is to influence, from the perspective of constitutional law, the study of those institutions and bodies dealing with security control and citizen political participation, with particular emphasis on the concept of "governance", that’s why the analysis must be included and the possible evaluation of public policies that apply to their implementation.
In this particular sense, the research line will have as priority areas the following ones:
- Public freedoms and security
- Legal security and institutional efficiency
- Political participation, democracy and ICTs
- Good governance and public policies for its management
- Political leadership
