GRC - SARX - Research Group on the Anthropology of Corporality

The main objective of SARX (Research Group on the Anthropology of Corporality) is to tackle the multiple dimensions of human corporality from a perspective that includes human, scientific and artistic wisdom, in order to create a new paradigm for the comprehension of the human body.   The aim behind this new paradigm is to overcome the mutually exclusive discourses of natural sciences and human sciences and provides understanding from an overall and cross-disciplinary point of view.

This interdisciplinary team, with a background in philosophical anthropology and phenomenological methodology, is divided into three complementary lines of research:
  1. A reflection on the lived anatomy of the human body
  2. A description of the experience of corporality, particularly based on the phenomenology of health and illness
  3. Care for the expressive and symbolic body, explored based on the theory and practice of movement as well as the personal and cultural dynamism of interaction and meaning.
From when it was set up during the 2012-2013 academic year, the ordinary work of the group was undertaken during specialised research seminars, held every two months.  Also, an annual International Seminar was organised to tackle the following topics: “Antropologia de la corporalitat: un enfocament interdisciplinari” (2013); “La mà: un microcosmos antropològic” (2014); “Dempeus sobre la terra: caminar, córrer, dansar” (2015); “El cos vulnerable” (2016).

As the result of interdisciplinary research work related to the anthropology of corporality it is important to underline the publication of articles and monographs with authors from various scientific fields.

Finally, as a demonstration of the consolidation of the research group, it is currently working on the publication of an interdisciplinary monograph that is representative of the group’s work over the past 5 years entitled: “Dempeus sobre la terra: caminar, córrer, dansar”.
