On Saturday 7 November, UIC Barcelona streamed the opening session for the UIC Barcelona Forum 2021, which was attended by over 70 people and moderated by Íñigo Ugalde, architect and lecturer at the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture.

The session began with a talk from Dr Mireia Las Heras, a lecturer in Human Resources in Organisations at the IESE Business School and director of the International Centre for Work and Family (ICWF), who introduced the idea of a sustainable career path.

Las Heras began by highlighting the importance of flexibility and one’s capacity to adapt to any professional environment in an aim to build a sustainable career.  As such, she explained how “we need to be looking one step ahead for opportunities to innovate and add value to our career”.

She continued by stressing how in the working world, it is vital to “stand out from the crowd” and “detach ourselves from what society deems to be wonted, from the so-called ‘norm’”. Even so, according to the speaker, there are three factors that push us to “stick to the status quo” and “not step outside the lines”: social pressure, legislative pressure and conformity.

It is undeniable that society abides by just one model, but, according to Dr Las Heras, “you don’t always have to follow the crowd”. With this in mind, “in order to maintain a sustainable career path it is essential that we advocate innovation; learn from the daily experiences that help us grow”, and above all “know who we want to be in the long run and what we want our contribution to look like”.

Following this talk, the audience posed their questions to the speaker and Mònica Argemí, UIC Barcelona Forum 2021 Committee member, introduced this year’s Forum by setting out the activities schedule from now until 13 March.  Argemí highlighted 13 March as a key date for the calendar, which is when the UIC Barcelona Forum 2021 will be held and when participants will present their academic and social impact projects.
