This year, fourth-year students from the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing organised the seminar as an online event, adapting its format to comply with the current restrictions on social interaction

On 27 October, students in their final year of the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing once again held the Seminar on “An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Elderly” as part of two subjects: the first of the same name and the second, “Old age and Dependency”. As the 7th seminar on this theme, the event this year focused on how to make healthcare more compassionate, one of the primary challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr Cristina Monforte, director of the Department of Nursing, introduced the seminar and welcomed guests alongside Laura Ferré, president of the Organising Committee, and Alex Muniesa from the Scientific Committee.
Next on the agenda was a round table discussion titled “Humanising healthcare. An interdisciplinary perspective”, among Leandra Martín Delgado, lecturer on the Bachelor's Degree in Nursing at UIC Barcelona; Miquel Ángel Viciana, head of Patient Care at the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau; Ingrid Ramo, healthcare psychologist and Silvia Mateu, social worker, both from the Cuides UIC Barcelona clinic.
The second half of the seminar featured two further round table presentations of final bachelor’s degree projects by fourth-year nursing students. The first was moderated by Cynthia García and presented the research projects titled “Death among the elderly due to COVID-19”; “Reflections on ageism on social media during the COVID-19 pandemic” and “The differences between nursing home protocols on family visits during the COVID-19 pandemic”.
The second was moderated by Marina Messeguer and presented the research projects titled “Professional experiences of COVID-19”; “Experiences of the families of elderly patients admitted due to COVID-19” and “Loneliness among the elderly in nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. A literature review”.
Before concluding the seminar, Alex Muniesa, president of the Scientific Committee, summarised the main conclusions drawn at the event and introduced the award for best presentation. Dr Albert Gallart and Dr Carmen Quiñoa, lecturers from the Department of Nursing, were tasked with assessing the presentations and announcing the winning project. This year, the award was given to Sergi Botella, Pablo Ruiz, Inés Torres, Magí Colet, Laura Farré, MªJosé Marín and Inés Depares, authors of the study “Experiences of the families of elderly patients admitted due to COVID-19”.
The 7th Seminar on “An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Elderly” was closed by Neus Calpe Damians, a nurse from the Hospital Universitari General de Catalunya, and Laura Ferré, president of the Organising Committee.
