FAQs / Help

Residence Permit

Do I need a Residence Permit?

All students whose period of study is due to last more than three months (90 days) must apply for a Residence Permit.

When and where do I apply for it?

EWithin one month (30 days) of entering Spain.
You may apply for it online, via the MERCURIO platform, or at the Immigration Office or Police Station in the province in which you intend to reside.

Check out the instructions for the MERCURIO platform.

How long will it take?

Once you have submitted your application, you will immediately be issued a certificate of registration which includes your name, nationality and the address that appears in your application, the Spanish foreign ID number (NIE) assigned to you and the registration date.

What documents do I need?

  • An official national visa application form, in duplicate, duly filled in and signed by the foreigner or their legal representative in the case of minors (this form is available at www.maec.es), full valid passport or travel document, recognised as valid in Spain and which must be valid for the duration of the requested stay.
    • EU citizens (community): Official registration form (EX18)
    • Non-EU citizens (non-community): Official registration form (EX00)
  • Official document that shows you have sufficient funds to support yourself and for accommodation for the duration of your studies (€532.51/month). This should be issued by your bank. In some cases, you will need to provide proof that you have sufficient funds to return to your home country.
  • Medical insurance from an insurance company authorised in Spain. This should cover your entire stay in Spain and must include, at least: medical expenses and repatriation in the event of accident or sudden illness.
  • Documentary proof that you are enrolled in an officially-recognised secondary, upper-secondary or science school.
  • Letter of admission to UIC Barcelona
  • Padrón certificate showing you have registered with the Town Council
  • Original copy and photocopy of the rental contract of your home.
    • If you do not have a contract, please submit the Habitability Authorisation along with a photocopy of the owner's Spanish national ID card and the ownership deeds of the home.
  • In the case of minors, authorisation from parents or tutors stating the school, organisation, entity and body responsible for the activity and the proposed period of study.
  • If you plan to stay longer than six months:
    • Official medical certificate, duly filled in. This certificate may be purchased at any estanco (tobacconist shop in Spain). It costs approximately €3.
  • If the student is of legal age, an original copy of the criminal record certificate issued by the authorities in their country of origin or the country in which they have resided during the last five years.

Important Considerations

All documents must be duly legalised by the Spanish Consular Office with jurisdiction in the country in which the document was issued or, if relevant, by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, unless this document bears the Hague Apostille.

All documents issued in any language other than Spanish must be translated into Spanish by a Sworn Translator.
