  • Organisation and development: Ten theory modules for a total of 150 hours (15 credits) plus a Final Postgraduate Degree Project (3 credits).
  • Programme:

MODULE 1A: Etiopathogeny and conceptualisation of BPD

In this module, we will study the concept of Borderline Personality Organisation, as well as the various etiological theories that account for the psychodynamics and development of Borderline Personality Organisation. We will use the Theory of Mind to explore the fundamental concepts of Mentalisation-Based Treatment. We will analyse Biosocial Theory, the basis for Dialectical-Behavioural Therapy.

MODULE 1B: Etiopathogeny and conceptualisation of BPD

In this module, we will look at the different definitions of BPD according to current international classifications, positive aspects and limitations. We will consider the use of different approaches and alternative dimensional models of pathological personality, as well as normal personality models, to gain a better understanding of BPD.

MODULE 2: Diagnosis of BPD

We will explore key aspects of the etiopathogeny of BPD and how the main theoretical models around which treatments with the most scientific evidence have been structured have been tested. Within the framework of BPD, we will consider the validity of possible endophenotypes, their neurobiological correlates and the role of genetic vulnerability and environmental factors.

MODULE 3: Diagnosis of BPD

We will revise the diagnosis of BPD in relation to potential comorbid disorders, particularly Attention Deficit Disorder/Hyperactivity, Substance Use Disorder and Eating Disorders. We will also take a look at the viable and reliable diagnostic instruments currently available (interviews and self-reports) and the instruments being developed, particularly those for complex situations, such as adolescents.

MODULE 4: Scientific evidence-based treatments

Description of the mechanisms for treating BPD and the practical integration of specific therapies into the daily reality of these mechanisms. We will look at the most significant aspects of each therapy and the degree to which they are backed by scientific evidence, according to national and international clinical guidelines.

MODULE 5: DBT

We will take a look at the precursors of Dialectical-Behavioural Therapy (DBT), the changes that have been made and how it is used on special populations, such as adolescents, and for similar disorders other than BPD. Definition of the general structure of DBT for adults and adolescents and the different stages of treatment and modules: skill training groups, individual therapy, family intervention, telephone coaching and support among therapists.

MODULE 6: MBT

Theoretical grounding of Mentalisation-Based Therapy (MBT) for adults, adolescents and families. In this module, students will learn to assess the ability to mentalise, as well as specific therapeutic techniques.

MODULE 7: TFP for Adolescents

Use of Transference-Focused Therapy (TFP) on adolescents diagnosed with BPD. In this module, we will also study the concepts and principles involved in identifying dominant behaviour and dyadic relationship patterns, therapist neutrality and transference, treatment framework and contract, levels of communication, factors that could interfere with prognosis, tactics, techniques and strategies, the interpretative cycle, how to handle difficult situations and the final stages of treatment.

MODULE 8: TFP for Adults

Use of Transference-Focused Therapy (TFP) on adults diagnosed with BPD.

MODULE 9: Other treatment strategies

This module will focus on the Schema Therapy model. We will analyse psychopharmacological treatment as an adjuvant integrated into the different specific therapy-based treatment models. We will consider possible treatments currently in study phase.

MODULE 10: Research

Revision of the main lines of research related to the aetiology, diagnosis and treatment of BPD. We will also discuss some of the most notable projects currently under way and future prospects, from new diagnostic approaches to information technology, as well as the main methodological difficulties in designing BPD studies and possible solutions.

MODULE 11: Practical cases

The students may present clinical cases as a way of gaining practical experience with the modules’ theoretical content. The instructors will also present illustrative clinical cases in order to generate discussion.

MODULE 12: Conclusion

General overview of all content and a summary of the main aspects covered in the course to ensure participants have a clear idea of the theoretical, technical and practical competences so that they may correctly diagnose and treat patients with BPD.
