Organisation and development

The curriculum is divided into eight teaching months from November 2020 to June 2021.  The modules are distributed monthly over the course of the academic year, with on-site activities on Friday afternoons.

Programme

The programme is made up of seven blended theory modules and one online theory module, constituting a total of 50 credits, as well as a final master’s degree project that students will present and defend at the end of the year (10 credits).

Each complete teaching unit (module) includes a period of independent theoretical study in the Virtual Classroom with online multimedia content, as well as one on-site session.

FINAL MASTER’S DEGREE PROJECT (TFM) - TO BE DEFENDED BEFORE AN ACADEMIC JURY

18/06/2021

On-site session

During the master’s degree, students will have access to:

  • One-hour weekly clinical sessions on the following sub-specialities: the anterior segment, refractive surgery, glaucoma, retina and vitreous, oculoplasty, ocular motility (strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology), including bibliographical and supplementary material.
  • Surgical amphitheatres that offer students the unique opportunity to view live surgery thanks to the emblematic transparent domes that house them and witness procedures just a few centimetres away from the operating table. Video footage from surgical microscopes is also played simultaneously on a closed-circuit television network, allowing the audience to view the procedures from the surgeon’s perspective.
  • At the Library. Students have access to a collection of over 10,000 books, multimedia material on ophthalmology, around one hundred subscriptions to specialised ophthalmology journals –some of which date back to the nineteenth century– and an archive of older, less-frequently consulted publications, to help them complete their assignments.
  • Online teaching
  • Assessment system
  • Professors and lecturers
  • Ophthalmology Moodle platform
  • Reading and revision of articles
  • Online classes
  • Case method
  • Problem-based learning

The master’s degree will be assessed using the following assessment systems:

 1.      Continuous assessment

Each subject or module includes three different assessment activities:

• A theory exam on the content taught over the course of the module, which will be taken at the start of the theory-practical sessions.

• Scientific articles with assessment questions.

• Clinical and/or surgical cases with assessment questions and/or problem-based learning.

The assessment procedure for each model will be as follows: 50% theory exam, 25% clinical cases assessment and/or problem-based learning and 25% assessment of scientific articles.

75% of the overall final mark will correspond to the average mark from the modules.

2.       Final master's degree project

The final mark for the TFM will be calculated as follows: 20% will correspond to the average mark of the tutorials (the two compulsory tutorials will be given preference); 40% will correspond to the correction of the final project (which must be written and submitted either in person or digitally depending on the circumstances); and 30% will correspond to the mark from the oral defence.

25% of the overall final mark will correspond to the average mark of the final master’s degree project.

The FINAL MARK for the master’s degree will be calculated as follows: 75% will correspond to the average of the weighted marks obtained in each module and 25% will correspond to the final master's degree project.

Attendance will be monitored and students must attend at least 85% of all on-site classes, which may also include virtual on-site classes sat in "real time” in cases of force majeure.
