Group EDO – UIC Barcelona

  • What is EDO
  • Team
  • Research
  • Transfer of knowledge

EDO is the Organisational Development Team led by Professor Joaquín Gairín Sallán, Full Professor of School Organisation at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

EDO has been recognised as a consolidated research group (Resolution of the Department of Universities, Research and the Information Society) since 18 October 2005; recognition that was renewed during the 2009 call (SGR2009-397) and which it currently maintains based on a further resolution of 7 May 2014 (2014SGR-176). Their main study focus is on the nature and development of organisations that are involved in training.

EDO is an umbrella network which acts as a cluster of knowledge linking up topics and lines of work related to organisational development with the aim of having an impact on educational processes. The structure is conceived of and based on different hubs which at the same time are research groups at the same university and also in other Catalan universities such as EDO-Lleida or EDO-UIC Barcelona.

EDO has a team of official partners from other Spanish universities, such as the universities of Alcalà, Valencia and Granada, and also other universities abroad such as the Catholic University of Valparaíso or the IUACJ. Red AGEis also linked to the EDO group at an international level.

Due to this network structure it is possible to create synergies between groups, facilitate an exchange of knowledge, research visits or research. EDO members are teachers and researchers who are interested in organisational development, share a scientific point of view and coexist. The various members present topics individually or collectively, plan action and discuss processes and results.

  1. The main principles accepted by all EDO members are:

Cooperation. The people involved accept the advantages and disadvantages of working in a group, remembering that activity in interest groups is the route to then undertaking activities at an individual level.

Cohesion.  The people and groups involved will commit to participating in the general activities that EDO organises as a group based on a desire to achieve integration and strong synergies.

Autonomy. Members create groups (either permanent or provisional) depending on the specific research or on the specific interest groups.  These function autonomously, respecting the obligations and rights which correspond to them as members of EDO.

Solidarity. The people and groups involved share projects and ideas and support each other when applying for funding, managing resources and promoting compliance with commitments taken on as members of the EDO group.

  2. Objectives

The Organisational Development Team (EDO) arose as the culmination of a process that took place over more than two decades, during which working groups were organised based on existing training needs and research topics which are a priority. The EDO team was created as a meeting point for the exchange and promotion of ideas and research in the area of organisational development.

The main objectives of the EDO group are related to the analysis of educational organisations, the study of processes of change and using strategies for improvement which are used or can be used.  Consistent topics of interest include the nature of educational organisations, their type, systems of institutional organisation and management, institutional dynamics, internal and external evaluation systems, strategies for change, resistance to change, the role of directors and the impact of new technologies. This in reference to academic institutions that are not institutional, such as training centres, healthcare organisations, leisure centres and other educational services.
