  • Characteristics of implants; their different shapes and surfaces.
  • Biomechanics, different types of force and their effect on the implant.
  • The different phases in developing treatment.
  • Different types of prosthesis that can be made.

Topic 2: Diagnosis and patient selection

  • Medical history and examination of the patient.
  • The usefulness of study models.
  • Complementary examinations most widely used and why.
  • Absolute and relative indications and contraindications.

Topic 3: Wax-ups, x-ray and surgery guide

  • The importance of the diagnostic wax-up and its applications.
  • The concept of the terms radiological guide and surgical guide.
  • The importance of the radiological guide in planning treatment.
  • Radiodiagnostic tests and their indications.

Topic 4: Pillar selection

  • Factors that determine the type of pillar to use.
  • Machine-milled, overpressed machine-milled and cast pillars, characteristics and indications.
  • Screw versus cement-retained prosthesis.

Topic 5: Taking impressions

  • Differences between natural teeth and implants and their importance in taking impressions.
  • Objectives of impressions over implants.

  • Open and closed tray techniques. Characteristics and indications.
  • Materials necessary for casting the impression.

Topic 6: Temporary prostheses

  • The importance of the temporary prostheses.
  • Types of temporary prostheses, indications.
  • Concepts of loads and immediate aesthetics.

Topic 7: Unitary prostheses

  • Learn about the distinguishing characteristics between anterior and posterior single prostheses.
  • The different elements necessary to make a single prosthesis over implants.
  • Risk factors involved in achieving an aesthetic result in anterior teeth.
  • Knowing about the importance of the distribution of forces in the posterior section as well as in relation to the implanted crown.

Topic 8: Partial prostheses

  • Materials used in their preparation.
  • Know about the different preparation phases of both anterior and posterior partial prostheses.
  • Learn about the type of occlusion in partial prostheses.

Topic 9: Fully fixed prosthesis

  • Learn about the different types of prostheses to make according to the materials and the type of prosthesis required. Concept of Hybrid Prosthesis and Full Arch.
  • Identify the different components and materials used in a complete fixed prosthesis.
  • Know which type of occlusion must be used for fixed implant supported prostheses.

Topic 10: Implant retained overdentures

  • The concept of what an overdenture is.
  • Clinical indications and contraindications.
  • Conceptualising the terms ‘implant-supported overdenture’ and ‘mucosa-implant-supported’ overdenture’.
