Day 1: Diagnosis - Treatment objectives

  • Introduction to the course and welcome.
  • The surgical patient.
  • The surgical patient, orthodontic perspective.
  • The orthognathic patient from a surgical perspective.
  • Facial analysis

Day 1: Practice

  • Facial analysis, in patients, in cases, photos, software.
  • Radiographic analysis, 2D and 3D.

Day 2: Planning orthodontic-surgical treatment. Pre-surgical orthodontics

  • Radiographic analysis.
  • Gamma scans with Tc 99. Indications. Monitoring protocol.
  • 3D CBCT X-Rays.
  • Photography.
  • Psychology and motivation of the surgical patient
  • Introduction to 2D planning
  • Record keeping for virtual protocol
  • Therapeutic Decision Planning, objectives, treatment plan
  • STO treatment planning. 2D theory and practice.

Day 2: Practice

  • 2D STO practice with computer programmes (Nemotec/Dolphin) and on paper.

Day 3: Planning 3D orthodontic-surgical treatment.

Day 4: Orthognathic Surgery. Complications. Orthognathic surgery in syndromic patients

  • Surgical technique in the different kinds of osteotomies.
  • Surgical and immediate postoperative complications.
  • Stability and recurrence. Containment methods.
  • Pre-surgery and immediately postoperative orthodontic management.
  • Transversal discrepancies.
  • Handling vertical problems.
  • Limits of surgical movements.
  • Orthognathic surgery in syndromic patients.

Day 5: Postoperative phase and immediate postoperative orthodontics. Airways. Impact on soft tissues.

  • Repercussions of skeletal movements on soft tissue.
  • Orthognathic surgery and respiratory tracts: Therapeutic approach to OSA
  • Post-surgical patient care.
  • Post-surgical orthodontics and case completion.
  • Orthodontic treatment in the immediate postoperative period, complications.

At the Teknon Maxillofacial Institute. Optional clinical experience in order to plan and be present for surgery cases scheduled at the Teknon Maxillofacial Institute. Presentation and discussion of the clinical cases put forward by students.

D - End-of-course research project

Preparation of a clinical case or a review of a relevant topic suitable for public presentation at the end of the course (as homework).
