In recent years the field of endodontics has made massive advances, meaning that it is almost essential to have up to date knowledge of the field in order to provide high quality dentistry services.

This programme is aimed at professionals, whether generalists or specialists, who wish to start out in or expand their knowledge in the field of endodontics. The programme combines theory sessions on the most innovative, pioneering and cutting edge subjects, alongside practical work with the latest generation of equipment and techniques.

During this practical work students will perform procedures with different magnification levels (magnifying glasses and microscopes). Students will be supervised by lecturers in their practical work. The course will include sessions following up cases and each student will have an individual tutor session with a lecturer from the UIC Department of Endodontics.

The programme offers an extensive overview of current endodontics, covering advanced basic concepts of pulpo-periapical pathology, instrumentation, refilling, reconstruction after root canal, dental traumatology, dental implants and autotransplantation. The course is intended to improve the quality of students' endodontic treatments, so that they feel more secure in tackling more complex treatments (refilling, perforations, reabsorption and dental traumatology). Regeneration and pulpar revascularisation will also be explained.

Course Objectives

  1. Define the concept of endodontics and establish its objectives.
  2. Understand the aetiology, aetiopathogenesis and clinical treatment of pulpar and periapical inflammation, in all variants.
  3. Understand the prognosis for treatment of root canals depending on the preoperative variables.
  4. Present the different types of root canal treatment
  5. Describe the emergency treatment of the different pulpal and periapical pathological entities
  6. State the essential x-rays for carrying out root canal treatment, and describe the technique for doing so
  7. Describe the ideal forms of opening canals for each tooth in the arch
  8. List the habitual root canals and the most frequent variations in each tooth
  9. Describe the different instrumentation techniques for root canals (rotary and reciprocal) during biomechanical preparation
  10. Cite the various irrigation solutions used in biomechanical preparation, indicating their properties and indications
  11. Present the standard clinical sequence to be followed in biomechanical preparation
  12. Present the objectives of obturation of the root canal system
  13. Understand the clinical properties of the various materials for root canal obturation
  14. Describe the different thermoplastic obturation techniques
  15. Understand the different endodontic treatment techniques for immature teeth
  16. Appropriately isolate the operating area before a root canal treatment
  17. Plan root canal treatment appropriately.
  18. Carry out full root canal treatments on different teeth in the arch
  19. Describe treatment options following a failed root canal
  20. Train the student in dental traumatology
  21. Be able to evaluate the difficulty of a root canal case and plan treatment correctly 22. Handling perforations and dental resorption
  22. Carry out cases with regeneration and pulpar revascularisation techniques

Skills the student will acquire

  • Appropriately isolate the operating area before a root canal treatment.
  • Plan root canal treatment appropriately.
  • Identify the equipment and instruments used in endodontics.
  • Carry out root canal openings correctly and locate accesses to them.
  • Prepare instruments correctly for root canals.
  • Carry out root canal obturation correctly.
  • Carry out full root canal treatments on different teeth in the arch.
  • Carry out in vivo root canal treatments in teeth with easy, medium and high difficulty levels.
  • Carry out root canal retreatment correctly (removal of posts, gutta-percha and broken instruments).
  • Plan dental traumatology cases adequately.
  • Plan dental resorption cases appropriately.
  • Correctly carry out the reconstruction of the tooth affected by root canal.
