Limited Places

We have signed two agreements aimed at providing you practical experience in the field of dentistry. We apply our theoretical knowledge at centres run by the Catalònia Foundation and Catalan Health Institute.

  1. A curricular work experience and educational cooperation agreement between the Faculty of Dentistry and the Catalònia Foundation for People with Mental Disabilities.
  2. A curricular work experience and educational cooperation agreement between the Faculty of Dentistry and the Catalan Health Institute.

Objectives

You will complete your practicums at the University Dental Clinic. This will give you the chance to put to use all your theoretical and technical knowledge and skills while treating patients. At the University Dental Clinic you will prepare for the challenges of your future profession and the realities of a constantly changing sector.

During the practicums, you must successfully perform the treatments that each subject requires, under the watchful eye not only of the instructors and lecturers, but also of the clinic's auxiliary staff and patients.

We simulate the clinical and operating procedures of a normal dental clinic so that you learn how to interact with patients, the clinical staff and collaborators (dental hygienists, auxiliary staff, dental technicians and suppliers).

Your time at the clinic will provide you, in addition to other types of knowledge, values generated by human interaction. It will raise your awareness and give you experience in dealing with all kinds of patients (adults and children).

The aim of the practicums is:

  • You will develop personal qualities: patience, sensitivity, friendliness, empathy, etc. Each one will enhance your ability to empathise with the patient and provide the most suitable treatment.
  • You will learn from those around you. The University Dental Clinic staff provide care services and are also a source of learning for you. They will provide practical knowledge that you can apply in your future career, including:
    • Managing the clinic's agenda
    • Preparing budgets
    • Managing patient complaints
    • Managing waiting lists (screenings, examinations, consultations)
    • Cleaning and sterilising the equipment
    • The possibility of working with equipment from different companies
    • Correctly handling, using and managing equipment, making the most out of the material resources
    • Experience with state-of-the-art dental technology
    • Experience in modern and well-equipped practicum and laboratory facilities.

At the University Clinic you will be able to complete the voluntary practicums during both the academic and holiday periods, helping you to further your knowledge and continue on your practicum track.

Thanks to agreements signed by the Faculty of Dentistry, the University Clinic is currently collaborating with patients on a number of ongoing scientific studies, all of which have been approved by the relevant Ethical Committee. The results of these studies are subsequently published and followed up on through research and teaching.

How it works

In the first couple of years, the practicums will help introduce you to the dentist-patient relationship. This introduction will be complemented by a curriculum that addresses humanistic and psychological aspects and by working side by side with active professionals.

During your practicums at the University Dental Clinic you will be supervised by clinical trainers, all of who are dentists by profession and schedule continuous tutorial sessions.

These practicums are compulsory both for you and all other students.

Subjects associated with the practicums:

  • Clinical Introduction
  • Basic Periodontics
  • Preventative Dentistry II
  • Advanced Periodontics
  • Paediatric Dentistry I, II, III, IV
  • Orthodontics I, II, III, IV
  • Prosthodontics I, II, III, IV
  • Dysfunction of the Masticatory System
  • Restorative Dentistry: A Clinical Introduction
  • Restorative Dentistry Clinic I, II
  • Traumatology

Regulations

During practicums you must comply with the regulations governing the University Dental Clinic.

  1. You must always wear the endodontics programme's regulation uniform (medical scrubs). You will be given the uniform at the beginning of the year, and it must be clean and complete.
  2. You must remain in the University Dental Clinic for the duration of the practicum, regardless of whether or not there are scheduled appointments. If there are no scheduled appointments you may help other classmates, undergraduate students or patients without an appointment, under the guidance of the supervising professor.
  3. While working, you must always wear gloves, a mask that covers your nose and mouth and safety goggles.
  4. Prior to each treatment, you must check the patient's clinical records and the scheduled treatment.
  5. You must collect the materials and equipment needed for the scheduled treatment from the storage room.
  6. You must notify the reception desk staff of your arrival at the clinic and accompany the patients to and from the reception desk upon arrival and following treatment.
  7. During scheduled practicum times you must observe the professor's decisions concerning which patient to visit, which treatment to perform on each patient and how to perform such treatments. However, to ensure that the clinic runs smoothly –something essential to programme development– the supervising professor's criteria will always take precedence in the event of a discrepancy between your criteria and that of another professor (though the issue may be discussed later on).
  8. Before dismissing the patient, you must enter the information about the treatment performed, any necessary comments and instructions for follow-up care in their clinical records. If the patient requires further treatment with you or your area, an appointment will be scheduled at the reception desk to facilitate organisation. If you need to refer the patient to another area or send them back to the undergraduate clinic, you must provide written notice at the reception desk.
  9. Under no circumstances may you keep any documents from the patient's clinical records once the treatment session has finished. If you need access to this information, you must ask the supervising professor for authorisation to make copies.
  10. Following treatment you must return the materials and equipment as indicated in each case.
  11. In the event of a malfunction in any of the clinic's equipment or tools, you must inform the person in charge before the practicum ends.
  12. If you are unable to attend a practicum you must inform the supervising professor and the reception desk staff at the clinic at least three weeks in advance. You must submit documentation justifying your absence preferably before it occurs, though in any case afterwards.
  13. In general, you must comply with all University Dental Clinic regulations throughout the training period.

If you fail to comply with the University Dental Clinic operating regulations you may be banned from the clinic. This will prevent you from fulfilling your practicum obligation, which is a requisite for completing the programme.
