Theoretical-practical seminars
These seminars are aimed at familiarising students with surgical material and basic surgical habits and techniques, before letting patients start on their first practical sessions.
1. Practical seminar of anatomical dissection
In conjunction with the Anatomy Unit at the Faculty of Medicine. Practical session involving the anatomical dissection of the oral cavity and its related anatomical structures.
Students will be paired per dissection specimen in theoretical classes on surgical anatomy, with explanations of the dissection objectives to be carried out in the practical session.

Objectives of the practical seminar on anatomical dissection:
Introduction to the topographic and surgical anatomy of the oral cavity. Students will review the most important anatomical structures in relation to the upper jaw and mandible, as well as their related musculotendinous, vascular, nervous and glandular structures.
In terms of the practical session, students will perform the most common techniques in oral, dentoalveolar and preprosthetic surgery on the upper jaw, as well as studying the maxillary sinus and the floor of the nasal cavity, as well as dissecting the Bichat ball.
Similarly, students will practice an intraoral approach on the mandible, identifying the structures of the mental nerve, the inferior alveolar nerve and the lingual nerve. Students will dissect the floor of the mouth, the glandular structures of the sublingual gland and the Wharton duct, identifying the lingual nerve.
If there are teeth, the anatomical dissections will involve practising classic tooth removal techniques.

Teaching staff:
  • Dr María Luisa Augé
  • Dr Ramón Sieira
  • Dr Carlos Pogliafito
  • Dr Marc Algueró
  • Dr Albert Pérez Bellmunt
  • Dr Héctor Parellada
  • Dr Guillermo Rocafort
The date of the practical session will be agreed at the beginning of the course depending on internal organisation and the availability of the Anatomy Unit of the Faculty of Medicine.
2. Special patient management anesthesia seminar
In conjunction with the Anaesthesia Department at the Hospital General de Catalunya. This seminar will be led by Pilar Mula, a specialist in Anaesthesiology and Reanimation, who will hold a theoretical and practical seminar on basic CPR during the slot scheduled for Clinical Residency in Surgical Techniques.
Dr Pilar Mula will lead this seminar, with collaboration from teaching staff from the Clinical Residency in Surgical Techniques.
3. CPR course
Cardiovascular diseases are a major health problem in the general population. A majority of avoidable deaths are due to coronary heart disease, which occur very frequently in out-of-hospital settings. Training is therefore encouraged among the general population, not only those who work directly in the field of health, as trained bystanders can play a decisive role as first responders.
This training will be given by an instructor from the Catalan Resuscitation Council (CCR) and includes the content of the official Spanish training for first aid and AED.
Students who pass the course will receive the official certificate for first aid and AED training, issued by the Catalan Resuscitation Council.
Faculty: Dr Jordi Castillo
4. Nitrous Oxide course
This programme offers an advanced perspective on nitrous oxide sedation in dentistry, as well as cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, but also reviews concepts related to medical gases in clinical pharmacology. Students will practice cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, defibrillator management, and how to use nitrous oxide conscious sedation apparatus. The nitrous oxide sedation course aims to help students improve the quality of their treatments, so they can treat patients with confidence.
Faculty: Dr Victor Gil and Dr José Manuel Ribera

Practical Programme

During clinical sessions with patients, students will treat patients at the University Dental Clinic under the supervision of teaching staff, offering the most appropriate diagnosis and treatment procedures for patient pathologies.

The aim of these practical sessions is not to provide medical and dental care, but rather to take part in a teaching activity that offers students basic theoretical and practical knowledge on surgical techniques applied to the oral cavity, without this leading to a reduction in the quality of patient care at the University Dental Clinic.
