Periodontics and Implants

Periodontics is a dentistry specialism that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of gum infections such as gingivitis, periodontitis and peri-implant diseases (mucositis and periimplantitis) as well as dental implants to replace missing teeth. Cosmetic treatment in this area addresses receding gums or a “gummy smile”.

Periodontal treatment improves the oral health conditions of affected patients, as well as their quality of life, by ensuring the survival of their own teeth for as long as possible. Treatment includes oral hygiene instructions tailored to each patient and removal of tartar by scaling and root planing. For more advanced cases, surgical treatment may be required to eliminate all the triggers of these diseases. Periodontics specialists also replace sections with missing teeth, using high-quality implants and biomaterials.

It is important to note that periodontal disease is the world’s leading cause of tooth loss. In its advanced stages it causes a great deal of inflammation that moves throughout the body, leading to an increased risk of heart attacks, worse control of diabetes, or premature births, among others.
