Line of research architecture and projects

Responsible:

Dr. Alberto Estévez Escalera

Objectives

The objectives in the medium-term of this line of research and the topics it covers are linked to the objectives and topics which each of the five research groups listed here are working on. These respectively correspond to the following fundamental profiled and research fields in architecture:

  • Architectural projects and design
  • The incorporation of gender studies into architecture and the arts
  • Architectural composition and history
  • Urbanism, territorial organisation and landscaping
  • Cooperation and architecture

Therefore, group by group the medium-term objectives are set out, as well as the topics tackled by each one, thus constituting the line of research which is presented here, overall: "Architecture and projects".

I. GRE- Architectural Heritage Research (AHR)

Coordinator: Josep Lluís
Members: Mónica López, Guillem Carabí, Ana Cocho, Diego Navarro

1. Romanesque architecture and Heritage

This line of research is part of the Emerging Research Group Architectural Heritage Research (AHR)

Coordinator: Josep Lluís
Members: Mónica López
Abstract: The main field of research is to deepen the knowledge of the architectural heritage through massive data capture with existing technology within our reach. The field of research focuses on existing buildings from the Romanesque period to the beginning of the 20th century. This group also has as a clear objective the analysis of the data obtained both from the software and the materials and the technology used in the construction of existing assets.

2. 19th and 20th Century Art and Architecture

This line of research is part of the Emerging Research Group Architectural Heritage Research (AHR)

Coordinator: Guillem Carabí
Members: Paolo Sustersic, Jelena Prokoplievic
Abstract: The research focuses on the knowledge of the tendencies, works, and architects that carried out the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, deepening in the historical processes that contextualized the mentioned period, as well as the interactions between the field of the ' art and architecture.

3. Advanced Algorithmics in Architectural design

This line of research is part of the Emerging Research Group Architectural Heritage Research (AHR)

Coordinator: Ana Cocho
Members: Diego Navarro
Abstract: With a clearly interdisciplinary approach, we propose to deepen in the relationship between Architecture and Computation within the methodological process of design through the study of Artificial Intelligence and its algorithm. Deep Learning (DL), Machine Learning (ML), Muti-Agent System Design (MAS), Person-centered Ambient Intelligence (AAL), Evolutionary Computation (EC), Shape Grammar (SG) or Linear and Logistic Regression (LR) become part of the architectural design from the nano-scale to the territorial scale, both in the data analysis process, Data Mining, as in theoretical discourse as well as in the language consolidation process.

Members: Mariola Borrell, Josep Corcó, Karl S. Chu, Gabriel Fernández, Ignasi Pérez Arnal.
Abstract: Together with its corresponding Master Degree in Biodigital Architecture, managed by the Group members, and starting in 2000, this research line deal with the application of genetics to architecture in an interdisciplinary way from two points of view: the real, natural and direct, that works with geneticists, and the metaphorical, artificial and digital, which uses CAD-CAM technologies. Emergence, metaphysics & computation, complexity, sustainability are also key words.

2. Biological Architecture & Digital

This line of research is part of the Consolidated Research Group Genetic Architectures (GENARQ)

Coordinator: Yomna Abdallah.
Members: Dennis Dollens, Agustí Fontarnau, Daniela Frogheri, María Gómez, Ariel Valenzuela.
Abstract: The research focuses on a new point of view at the environment that introduces biological techniques to architecture and design, and seeks with digital tools a biodigital fusion. Understanding the potential of biolearning, biomanufacturing and genetics. This led to the creation of the world's first genetic architecture laboratory in 2000, where genetics began to be applied to architecture and design (bioluminescent trees, biolamps, bioprinting, SEM structures research, etc.).

3. Digital Architecture & Biology

This line of research is part of the Consolidated Research Group Genetic Architectures (GENARQ)

Coordinator: Pablo Baquero.
Members: Dragos Brescan, Effimia Giannopoulou, Marwan Halabi, Abdul Harib, Affonso Orciuoli, Angad Warang.
Abstract: In a pioneer, international and interdisciplinary environment, long demonstrated over two decades, since 2000, more specifically, it can be mentioned the work in the research and teaching of architecture and computation, with concepts such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Ambient Intelligence (AmI), Deep Learning (DL), Evolutionary Computation (EC), Logistic Regression (LR), Machine Learning (ML), Muti-Agent Systems (MAS), Shape Grammars (SG), among others.

Abstract: Study of the visual culture produced by women throughout history. Analysis of the (in) historical visibility of female creativity. The members of the group study concrete cases of the creative work of women who to date have not had historical recognition in different fields such as literature, music, architecture or the plastic arts.

V. GRC- Grup de Recerca Arquitectura i Ciències Socials (GIRAS) in collaboration with the UPC

Coordinator: Josep Muntañola
Members: Magda Saura, Lluis Àngel Domínguez, Jaume Ferrer
Abstract: Architecture is based on three fundamental pillars: the project, the built territory and its historical and social use. It is analyzed how these three bases of architecture are articulated in the scientific field, as aesthetic and finally ethical-political. The most precise objective will be, therefore, the study of the built environment as a diaphragm between our mind and our social history of use of space.

Line of research architecture and technique

Responsible:
